Data industry consolidation accelerates with latest acquisition

Cloud data giant Snowflake has made another strategic move in the rapidly evolving data infrastructure space, announcing plans to acquire PostgreSQL specialist Crunchy Data for approximately $250 million. While Snowflake declined to confirm the exact deal value, industry sources indicate the transaction falls in this range.

Strategic move in the AI-powered data wars

This acquisition represents the latest in a string of high-profile deals as major tech companies expand their AI-ready database capabilities. Just last week, Salesforce acquired Informatica for data management enhancements, following similar moves by Alation (Numbers Station) and ServiceNow (Data.World) earlier this month.

Why Crunchy Data matters

Founded 13 years ago, Crunchy Data provides enterprise-grade tools for working with PostgreSQL, the powerful open source object-relational database system. The company counts major organizations like UPS, SAS, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security among its clients.

Snowflake’s Postgres ambitions

The acquisition will enable Snowflake to launch Snowflake Postgres, a new enterprise PostgreSQL database solution. Existing Snowflake partners including Blue Yonder and LandingAI will get access to this enhanced offering, which is expected to enter private preview soon.

“We’re tackling a massive $350B market opportunity by bringing Postgres to the Snowflake AI Data Cloud,” said Vivek Raghunathan, Snowflake’s SVP of Engineering.

Building on previous integrations

Snowflake first introduced PostgreSQL connectors in 2024, following its acquisition of data management firm Datavolo the previous year. The Crunchy Data purchase represents a more substantial commitment to the PostgreSQL ecosystem as Snowflake expands its position as a comprehensive data and AI platform.

This strategic acquisition reinforces how critical robust database infrastructure has become in powering next-generation AI applications, with Snowflake positioning itself at the center of this technological evolution.
