Snowflake Acquires Crunchy Data for $250M
Snowflake Expands Data Platform with Strategic Acquisition
Cloud data giant Snowflake has made another strategic move in the AI-driven data market, announcing its acquisition of PostgreSQL specialist Crunchy Data for approximately $250 million. While neither company disclosed the exact terms, industry sources confirm the quarter-billion-dollar valuation aligns with recent trends in data infrastructure acquisitions.
PostgreSQL Expertise Joins Snowflake’s Arsenal
The acquisition brings Crunchy Data’s 13 years of PostgreSQL experience into Snowflake’s ecosystem. Crunchy Data has built an impressive client roster that includes enterprise leaders like UPS, SAS, and Moneytree, along with government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
This transaction will enable Snowflake to launch Snowflake Postgres – an enterprise-grade PostgreSQL solution that integrates with the company’s existing AI Data Cloud platform. The technology will soon be available in private preview for select customers and partners including Blue Yonder and LandingAI.
AI Drives Data Platform Consolidation
Snowflake’s move follows a wave of recent acquisitions in the data management space as companies race to enhance their AI capabilities:
- Salesforce’s $8 billion purchase of Informatica
- Alation’s acquisition of Numbers Station
- ServiceNow buying Data.World earlier this month
“We’re tackling a massive $350 billion market opportunity,” said Vivek Raghunathan, Snowflake’s SVP of Engineering. “Bringing Postgres to the Snowflake AI Data Cloud addresses critical enterprise needs in the AI era.”
Building on Previous Integrations
Snowflake has been steadily expanding its database capabilities, having launched PostgreSQL and MySQL connectors in 2024 and acquiring data management firm Datavolo in late 2024. The Crunchy Data acquisition represents the company’s latest investment in becoming a comprehensive data and AI platform.
This strategic purchase positions Snowflake to better serve enterprises looking to leverage PostgreSQL’s flexibility within a managed cloud environment as they develop increasingly sophisticated AI applications.
