Open-Source Robotics Expansion

AI development leader Hugging Face has entered the robotics arena with two groundbreaking open-source humanoid robots: HopeJR and Reachy Mini. This strategic move reinforces the company’s growing influence in the AI and robotics sectors.

Meet the New Robotic Duo

The full-size HopeJR boasts an impressive 66 actuated degrees of freedom, enabling sophisticated movements including walking and arm articulation. Its compact counterpart, the Reachy Mini, serves as an accessible desktop unit capable of speech, listening, head movements, and AI application testing.

Pricing and Availability

According to CEO Clem Delangue, Hugging Face plans to begin shipping the first units by year-end. Pricing breaks down as:

  • HopeJR: Approximately $3,000 per unit
  • Reachy Mini: $250-$300 range (price may vary based on tariffs)

Commitment to Open Robotics

“These robots are democratizing robotics technology,” Delangue emphasized. “By making them open-source and affordable, we’re preventing market dominance by big players with opaque systems.” The company believes this approach will accelerate innovation throughout the robotics field.

Strategic Growth in Robotics

This release follows Hugging Face’s April acquisition of Pollen Robotics, which provided crucial humanoid robotics expertise. The company has been actively expanding its robotic capabilities, including:

  • Launching the LeRobot platform in 2024 (AI models and tools for robotics systems)
  • Partnering with The Robot Studio on the SO-101 robotic arm
  • Collaborating with Yaak to add self-driving machine training data

Hugging Face’s foray into humanoid robotics represents a significant step toward accessible, open-source AI-powered machines. With these releases, the company continues to challenge traditional robotics development models while expanding the boundaries of AI-integrated hardware.
