Google Tests Audio Overviews in Search
Google Introduces Voice-Based Search Summaries
Google is testing a new Audio Overviews feature in Search, representing the company’s latest effort to enhance information accessibility through AI-powered speech. This experimental feature, now available in Google Labs, builds on the technology first introduced in NotebookLM, Google’s AI note-taking assistant.
How Audio Overviews Work
Powered by Gemini AI models, Audio Overviews provide spoken summaries for select search queries. The system automatically offers this option when it detects queries that would benefit from audio presentation. Users receive:
- Play/pause controls
- Volume adjustment
- Variable playback speeds
- Source citations with clickable links
Designed for Multitasking and Accessibility
Google positions this feature as ideal for auditory learners and users who prefer hands-free information consumption. “Audio Overviews offer a convenient way to absorb information whether you’re multitasking or simply prefer listening,” Google explained in their announcement.
Connected Features and Industry Context
The launch follows Google’s previous audio AI implementations:
- NotebookLM: Generates AI podcast-style summaries from user documents
- Gemini: Added Audio Overviews in March 2025
However, the timing coincides with concerns that AI-generated summaries may reduce traffic to original content sources, as highlighted in recent industry reports.
Available Now for Testing
Early adopters can access Audio Overviews through Google Search Labs, where they can provide feedback via thumbs up/down ratings. The feature represents Google’s continued investment in multimodal AI experiences beyond traditional text-based search results.
