Google has introduced a new AI-powered feature in Gmail that automatically summarizes emails using its Gemini AI assistant. The tool generates concise summaries of email content and updates them as new replies arrive, appearing at the top of email threads.
The feature eliminates the need for users to manually request summaries, though the traditional option remains available via a button at the top of emails and in Gmail’s Gemini sidebar. Currently, the auto-summarization works only for emails in English.
This update follows Google’s broader push to integrate AI across its productivity tools, though the company has faced challenges with AI accuracy in other products. Similar AI summarization features from Apple and Google’s own search engine have previously produced errors, prompting temporary rollbacks in some cases.
Availability varies by region, with the EU, UK, Switzerland, and Japan having the feature disabled by default due to regulatory considerations. Users can toggle the setting in Gmail’s “Smart Features” section, while workplace administrators can control it through the Admin Console.
