Alta’s AI Stylist Raises $11M for Closet Tech

The Vision Behind Alta’s AI-Powered Fashion Revolution

Jenny Wang, a 28-year-old tech entrepreneur, has turned her long-standing vision into reality with Alta, an AI styling platform that helps users choose outfits based on budget, lifestyle, weather, and calendar events. After several earlier attempts stalled due to immature AI technology, Wang finally launched Alta earlier this year, securing an $11 million seed round led by Menlo Ventures.

How Alta’s Virtual Stylist Works

Inspired by the iconic digital closet scene from “Clueless,” Alta’s AI fashion assistant combines deep learning with personalization:

Smart Outfit Recommendations

Users receive AI-generated suggestions for events like conferences or date nights. The system creates complete lookbooks tailored to each occasion.

Digital Closet Integration

Clothing items can be added by:

  • Photographing existing wardrobe pieces
  • Forwarding purchase receipts
  • Selecting from Alta’s fashion database

Virtual Try-On Technology

The platform lets users mix existing and potential new purchases on a personalized digital avatar, offering a preview of complete outfits before buying.

Competitive Edge in AI Fashion Tech

While competitors like Whering and Cladwell compete in the AI styling space, Wang emphasizes Alta’s advanced technical architecture. “Existing players like Google Shopping and Pinterest are experimenting with AI,” she notes, “but consumers will crave experiences built with new interfaces and technology.”

Alta’s credibility is boosted by collaborations with industry leaders, including Michelle Obama’s former stylist Meredith Koop, who helped train the AI models.

Star-Studded Investor Backing

The startup has attracted investment from an impressive roster, including:

  • Benchstrength and Algaé Ventures (backed by LVMH’s Arnault family)
  • Phenomenal Ventures (founded by Kamala Harris’ niece)
  • Anthropic’s Anthology Fund
  • Celebrity angels including DoorDash CEO Tony Xu and supermodels Jasmine Tookes and Karlie Kloss

Global Expansion Plans

With fresh funding, Alta plans to:

  • Scale its technical team and R&D efforts
  • Expand through partnerships with CFDA and retail brands
  • Grow internationally with support from LVMH and tech influencer Zita d’Hautville
  • Develop Oceania/Pacific markets with Marie Kondo

Wang, who relocated from San Francisco to New York to build the fashion tech company, remains hands-on: “I’m actively coding every day while learning from our team and advisors.” She believes New York’s thriving consumer AI ecosystem positions Alta for success in revolutionizing how we shop and dress.
